Motown the Musical on Broadway

Motown_650X370

Motown the Musical is a show that connects to you on so many levels. I’m still replaying the songs in my head the day after ….and that’s a good thing! The music features top hits from some of the most beloved Motown artists of all time that will keep a smile on your face from beginning to end.

Here is a little more about the show.

Directed by Charles Randolph-WrightMOTOWN THE MUSICAL is the true American dream story of Motown founder Berry Gordy’s journey from featherweight boxer to the heavyweight music mogul who launched the careers of Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, StevieWonder, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye and so many more. Featuring more than 40 classic hits such as “My Girl” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,”MOTOWN THE MUSICAL tells the story behind the hits as Diana, Smokey, Berry and the whole Motown family fight against the odds to create the soundtrack of change in America. Motown shattered barriers, shaped our lives and made us all move to the same beat.

Motown Tour
A few years ago, my family visited the Hitsville U.S.A. Motown Museum in Detroit, Michigan. It was incredible to walk into the building that birthed a musical movement that is still cherished by multiple generations today. We stood in rooms that legendary artists recorded their smash hits in. After watching Motown the Musical, I want to revisit Hitsville U.S.A. even more because I have an even greater appreciation for what unfolded there.

The storyline of Motown the Musical really helps you appreciate the history, the adversity and dedication that Berry Gordy and the artists he helped develop, sacrificed to bring Motown to life.

Bluegrass for Babies 2015 Tickets and Green BEAN Delivery Giveaway

 bluegrass babies465
A few years ago I interviewed the Founders of the Bluegrass for Babies event who wanted a way to give back to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Each year this event has grown and continued to provide an excellent event for the whole family.

On Saturday, September 19, Bluegrass for Babies returns to Sawyer Point for its 7th annual concert benefiting Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. The family-friendly concert, which runs from 3-9pm, features music from top bluegrass bands, plenty of family-friendly activities, a variety of vendors, local and organic concessions, and much more.

bluegrass babies484

This year’s concert lineup features performances from returning local bands, Hickory Robot at 3pm and Comet Bluegrass All-Stars at 7pm. Special guest Jennifer Ellis will perform her popular children’s songs at 4:15pm. Headlining the event with a performance at 5pm is Pennsylvania band Cabinet. Cabinet was recently named one of the “Top 10 Country Artists You Need to Know in 2015” by Rolling Stone.

New for this year’s concert are expanded food options including booths from Eli’s BBQ, Mazunte, Dewey’s Pizza and Green BEAN Delivery. Local craft beer offerings have also expanded with beers from Mad Tree and Mt. Carmel breweries on tap.

The concert, an official Giving Hope Fundraising Event for Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, was started by Anne and Matt Schneider in 2009 as a way to give back to Children’s, which had provided life-saving surgery to their newborn son. Since the first concert in their backyard in 2009, Bluegrass for Babies has raised nearly $130,000 for Children’s, and has evolved into the Healthy Roots Foundation, a year-round organization providing tools, programming, and resources as well as hosting a variety of special events with the mission of helping parents create an optimal environment to raise healthy children.

bluegrass babies93

“Our lives were forever changed because of the care we received from the physicians at Cincinnati Children’s,” said co-founder Anne Schneider. “We created Bluegrass for Babies to not only raise funds for the hospital, but with the goal to help educate parents on raising healthy children.”

Money raised at the concert will be donated to the Perinatal Institute at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and an innovative pilot study being conducted at the Center for the Prevention of Preterm Birth. Dr. Louis Muglia and his team are working to better understand environmental exposures such as air and ground pollution and their effects on pregnancy outcomes. Rather than using geographic and EPA data, the researchers will provide pregnant women with personal monitors that will collect specific, individual data. For the first time ever, researchers will have detailed information about the environmental impact on increased risk for preterm birth and still birth.

Tickets for the Bluegrass for Babies benefit concert are $15 for adults in advance and $20 day of, with children admitted for free. Group tickets, new this year, are $10 in August and $12 in September. Presale period ends Friday, September 18, 2015. Tickets can be purchased at www.bluegrassforbabies.com.

**New this year, group tickets are available for the concert. Group tickets are $12 (instead of $15). The group with the most participation will win several great prizes. Learn more here.

Sponsorship packages for families and organizations are available, offering VIP perks at the benefit concert, such as guaranteed parking. Details can be found at www.bluegrassforbabies.com.

Play Minecraft at a Movie Theater with Super League Gaming

Play Minecraft at a Movie Theater with Super League Gaming
Do you have kids who LOVE to play video games? Do you wish they would socialize more?
Super League Gaming has created an event that combines the love of video games while also providing a social setting where you can play Minecraft at a movie theater with others.

Super League Gaming is the “world’s first recreational video game league in a cool movie theatre.”

It’s a weekly event that’s just recently launched, and over 80 theatres are participating, including Regal, AMC, Cinemark, and iPic. Players simply pick up some tickets, bring their laptops, and settle in for a tournament while they munch on popcorn. Tickets cost $20 for the summer sessions and $120 for the fall sessions.

Super League President and COO Brett Morris is a dad.  “It’s incredible how many kids are spending hours playing or watching YouTube videos of others playing this game [Minecraft] and we thought there just had to be a way to bring these kids, who were all playing alone in their rooms, together somehow,” he says. “As a parent, you want your kids to explore their passions, but when they’re by themselves, consumed in this other world, you can’t help but want them to be out with other kids their age, connecting over shared passions. That’s what Super League is meant to do, bring gamers together for some good old fashioned competitive fun in a safe environment.”

Super League’s proprietary technology allows players to merge on one screen (a big screen). They can play normally on their own laptops, but everyone shares a third-person aerial view on the theatre’s screen.

Super League Minecraft is the first game being offered. CaptainSparklez, a wildly popular Minecraft YouTuber, will be appearing at some events. (Ask your kids if you aren’t familiar with the name. Chances are they can tell you all about him.) You can vote on the next tournament’s game of choice on Super League’s website.

Super League’s Co-Founder and Chief Visionary, John Miller, says: “There are all kinds of leagues out there, but there’s still a vast group of gamers who don’t have any way of organizing themselves into recreational teams. We were just a group of dads who saw that void and thought this would be a great way to bring gaming to life. Gamers learn how to cooperate, how to develop their social skills, and work together toward a common goal over a period of time. The core concept of teamwork is still there. We’re just evolving the playing field.”

About Super League Gaming
Founded in 2014, Super League Gaming (https://superleague.com/) is the world’s first interactive video game league that brings gamers together for an immersive, collaborative gameplay experience in theaters throughout the country. Based in Santa Monica, California, Super League Gaming allows players to compete as they socialize in a face-to-face environment while playing the popular game Minecraft, with plans to expand to additional games and cities in the coming months.

Tips for Attending Slide the City

Tips for Attending Slide the City

Slide the City is a fun event that gives participants the opportunity to waterslide on city streets. My son and I had such a fun time at the event but I wish I would have known a few things before we went.

Slide the City

1. If you have a triple or unlimited ticket, you get to keep your tube. It also needs to be inflated. I assumed that we were borrowing tubes but we got our own souvenir.  There was a non profit filling up tubes for a donation at our event. I’m not sure if they do that in every city. I wish I knew that prior because I would have brought money.

2. You will receive a drawstring bag with your uninflated tube, tattoo, and mouthguard. You don’t really need the mouthguard or the bag. You will either need to go back to your vehicle to drop off the stuff, have someone hold it, or tube while wearing it.

Slide the City

3. If you bring your phone, make sure that you have a waterproof case. Don’t risk getting your phone wet because you will get wet.

4. Have a plan for your vehicle key.I put my vehicle key in my waterproof bag. You could also tie it to a string or strap on your swimsuit.

Slide the City

5. Wear flip flops or sandals. You will still be standing on a street before it’s your turn to tube.

6. If you are body conscious, wear running shorts and an athletic material tank over your swimsuit. Cotton doesn’t do as well when it gets wet and there are lots of people taking pictures and video. I decided to err on the side of caution in case my swimsuit had a malfunction.

Slide the City

7. Try to get as much speed as you can in the beginning. There are volunteers to help give you a push if you need it but it’s way more fun when you are going fast.

8. If you are debating on which type of ticket to get, I recommend the unlimited if you can purchase your ticket early while the prices are lower. My 2nd place option would be the triple slider. (full disclosure- a friend gave us triple slider tickets) If you have a single slide ticket, you still have to bring your own tube which is a pain. I feel like only going down the slide one time would be a disappointment because you would want to go more. The triple slide ticket was fun but our three slides down went fast and we definitely would have gone down more if we had the option.

9. Allow for enough time to park and check in before your scheduled time slot starts.

10. Leave your towels in the car. It’s easier to not have to keep track of them at the event.

Slide the City

11. Have Fun!

You can find out more about Slide the City from their website.

Old West Festival Info and Giveaway

Ever wish you could see what life was like in the Olden Days?

Old West Festival 2

The Old West Festival allows you to do just that! You get a taste of the excitement while you are transported into Old West culture. You can read more about our experience from years past here.

Old West Fest 3

Drawing more than twenty thousand visitors each fall, the permanent old west town is home to everything you would expect to see in Dodge City circa 1878. Attendees will enjoy historically accurate medicine and saloon shows, can-can dancers, gunfights, jailbreaks, and more. Period reenactors will also be found walking the streets and performing the roles of cowboys, cowgirls, storeowners, residents, and of course, outlaws.

The Old West Festival will also be abuzz with western music. Attendees can enjoy the sounds of the 1800’s with music from Gunpowder Creek as well as Raison d’Etre, a trio mixing traditional folk songs with a capella swing tunes and Shaker hymns.

Old West fest 4

Other performers will be ‘round town as well. Magician Jason Jacobs will amaze, bewilder and astonish with his magical flare and the Pickled Brothers will shock with their mind-boggling performances. Trick rider Abigail Petersen will impress audiences with her horsemanship and daring stunts, while visitors to the Long Branch Saloon will enjoy shows by world champion roper Rider Keisner, and folks will no doubt get a “kick” out of Miss Melody Star and her Hurdy Gurdy Dancing Girls.

And what would the old west be without a good ole’ fashioned gunfight? Back by popular demand, four times daily starting at high noon, the Big Irons Rangers return with their gunfight re-enactments and trick shooting. In between shows they, and other period interpreters, will be walking the grounds to meet visitors and pose for photos.

The Old West Festival is a grand time for the young’ins, too. At 10:15 a.m. daily, the kiddies can get sworn in as town deputies. They can also enjoy old-timey puppet and magic shows, storytelling and sing-a-longs. The youngsters can also participate in historic games, pan for gold, take a ride on the A&A Express train, take a pony ride, and even cross the frontier in a covered wagon.

Themed weekends add to the experience of the Old West Festival and include

Western Film Weekend Sept. 12-13

Romance Weekend Sept. 19-20

America’s Pastime Weekend Sept. 26-27

Steampunk Weekend Oct. 3-4

OctoBEERfest Weekend Oct. 10-11

and Halloween Weekend Oct. 17-18

To celebrate the opening of another season, the Old West Festival presents Western Film Weekend. Iconic scenes of cowboys riding into the sunset, saloon brawls and gunfights have shaped our idea of the Wild West. Guests will enjoy screenings from classic movies, experience a lively panel discussion and meet the cast and crew from Revelation Trail, a western film shot on the grounds of the Old West Festival.

We LOVE to admire the creativity on display by LEGO Master builders. We’ve enjoyed LEGO Kidsfest and  LEGOland in Orlando in the past and always welcome any new opportunity to see a display.

Tips for Attending the All-Star Fanfest

Tips for Attending the All-Star Fanfest

1. Park near Washington Park and take the free shuttle to Duke Energy Convention Center.

free shuttle

The traffic is less congested there and it’s also easier to get back on the expressway from that location.

2. Bring sealed bottled water and plan your meals ahead of time.

I recommend eating right before you go and then having a strategy for your other meals if you are budget conscious. There are concessions inside that provide a lot of options. We were able to split a large loaded nacho for $8 that was filling and my kids each got the kid nachos for $3.

3. Pre register online for your waiver to participate in activities and activate your registration as soon as you get there. T Mobile Customers can also get a bracelet to jump the line for the activities.

4. Start at the top floor and work your way down.

There is so much to do on the bottom floor that you might not make it to the other floors otherwise. You will need to pace your kids to allow enough time for them to try all of the kids activities.

5. Bring a bag or get a free one from one of the sponsors to put all of your swag in.

You are given A LOT of stuff at this event.

6. Take advantage of all of the free photo opps

Our family spent HOURS at Fanfest and could have stayed even longer if we didn’t have time constraints that day.

The All-Star Fanfest really is a great event, even if you are not a huge baseball fan. There is something for everyone there.

You can find out more about the All-Star Fanfest from the MLB website.
