Cincinnati Shakespeare Company Presents “Twelfth Night”

I recently attended a performance of the Twelfth Night by Cincinnati Shakespeare Company.  I was not familiar with the play prior to the show but the cast definitely made the play memorable.

In the wake of a shipwreck, Lady Viola (Maggie Lou Rader) washes up on the shores of Ilyria, penniless and alone. Disguising herself as a boy, she procures employment delivering love letters from the amorous Duke Orsino (Brent Vimtrup) to the object of his infatuation, the aloof Lady Olivia (Corinne Mohlenhoff). Things get sticky when Viola herself falls for the lovesick Duke, then stickier still when Lady Olivia falls for the disguised Viola. Add into the mix a drunken uncle, a prudish steward and a wise-cracking fool, and you’ve got a knot only time can untangle. Audiences will enjoy a traditional Elizabethan staging of this classic Shakespearean gender-bender, “Twelfth Night”.

Twelfth2-1

There were so many funny moments during the play.  Shakespeare plays usually take me a little while to adjust because of the language but there was a lot of physical comedy that translates for any time period.

This scene pictured above with Mavolio wearing the special yellow tights was really entertaining!

Twelfth1-1

Sir Andrew played by Justin McCombs was also a lot of fun to watch. His expressions and mannerisms were really comical.

Maggie Lou Rader did a great job of portraying a girl trying to act like a boy.

The Twelfth Night is such a fun Shakespeare play to see.

You still have time to catch a performance of the Twelfth Night.
