5 Reasons Why I Loved Rodgers + Hammerstein’s CINDERELLA

January 7, 2015 By Nedra McDaniel Leave a Comment

I was most familiar with the Disney version of the story of Cinderella before watching the play. I knew that Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella would be different from the Disney storyline but the play exceeded my expectations for many reasons!

Here is a little more about the play.
With its fresh new take on the beloved tale of a young woman who is transformed from a chambermaid into a princess, this hilarious and romantic Rodgers + Hammerstein’s CINDERELLA combines the story’s classic elements – glass slippers, pumpkin, and a beautiful ball along with some surprising twists. More than just a pretty face with the right shoe size, this Cinderella is a contemporary figure living in a fairytale setting. She is a spirited young woman with savvy and soul who doesn’t let her rags or her gowns trip her up in herquest for kindness, compassion and forgiveness. She longs to escape the drudgery of her work at home and instead work to make the world a better place. She not only fights for her own dreams, but forces the prince to open his eyes to the world around him and realize his dreams too.

1. It was funny!

I wasn’t expecting to laugh as much as I did. One of the stepsisters named Charlotte brought me the most laughs but there was a good amount of humor throughout the show.

2. The dress transformations are amazing!

You will find yourself wishing that you could have an instant replay to wrap your mind around how they make the dress transformations possible. It happens fast so make sure that you pay close attention.

3. The creative set and lavish costumes really helped create a grand setting.

4. The combination of  incredible music by RODGERS + HAMMERSTEIN  and singing and dancing by the talented cast was so entertaining to watch.

5. CINDERELLA is kid friendly and appeals to all ages.

On opening night there were a lot of kids in the audience who seemed to also be enjoying themselves. There was something for everyone.

Dirty Dancing on Broadway

Dirty Dancing is movie that I’ve seen A LOT. I was curious to see how the Broadway version would interpret the movie that is loved by so many. I’m happy to report that for the most part the Broadway play stayed true to the movie. I think most of the audience could probably recite the movie line by line and they also recognized most of those same lines and scenes in the Broadway production as well.

I’m sooo excited that SISTER ACT on Broadway is coming to Cincinnati!

I have great memories of many of the scenes from the movie and I can’t wait to see the play.

Direct from Broadway, SISTER ACT, the hilarious, five-time Tony-nominated musical smash, is coming to Cincinnati. Called “In a word, DIVINE!” by the Associated Press, SISTER ACT opens at the Aronoff Center April 30 for a limited engagement presented as part of the Fifth Third Bank Broadway in Cincinnati 12/13 Season.

Here is a little bit more about the plot.

When disco diva Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a murder, she is put in protective custody in the one place cops are sure she won’t be found – a convent! Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and an uptight Mother Superior. Using her fabulous disco- ness and killer voice to inspire the choir, Deloris breathes new life into the church, but in doing so blows her cover. Soon it’s nun-on-the-run time but she finds salvation in the heavenly power of her newly found sisterhood. Based on the mega-hit feature film, SISTER ACT features an original Alan Menken/Glenn Slater score with a vast inspiration of musical styles from Motown, soul and funk to great big disco anthems and Barry White inspired musical comedy.

Produced by Whoopi Goldberg, Stage Entertainment and Troika Entertainment, SISTER ACT received five 2011 Tony® Award nominations: BEST MUSICAL, BEST ORIGINAL SCORE (Alan Menken (music)/Glenn Slater (lyrics), BEST BOOK OF A MUSICAL (Cheri & Bill Steinkellner and Douglas Carter Beane), BEST ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL (Patina Miller) and BEST FEATURED ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL (Victoria Clark).

SISTER ACT will play the Aronoff Center from April 30 – May 12, 2013:

Tuesday- Friday at 8:00PM,

Saturday at 2:00PM and 8:00PM,

and Sunday at 1:00PM and 6:30PM.
