Dirty Dancing on Broadway

Dirty Dancing is movie that I’ve seen A LOT. I was curious to see how the Broadway version would interpret the movie that is loved by so many. I’m happy to report that for the most part the Broadway play stayed true to the movie. I think most of the audience could probably recite the movie line by line and they also recognized most of those same lines and scenes in the Broadway production as well.

Ghost ~The Musical on Broadway

September 27, 2013 By Nedra McDaniel Leave a Comment

Ghost the Musical

When I first heard about Ghost the musical, I had a hard time imagining how they would create a play out of a movie that was so character driven. Demi, Patrick and Whoopi were powerhouse actors in the film “Ghost” but I was pleasantly surprised by the outcome of the play.

“The musical’s tale of everlasting love is thrilling entertainment for audiences of all ages. Adapted from the hit film by its Academy Award-winning screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin, Ghost the Musical follows Sam and Molly, a young couple whose connection takes a shocking turn after Sam’s untimely death. Trapped between two worlds, Sam refuses to leave Molly when he learns she is in grave danger. Desperate to communicate with her, he turns to a storefront psychic who helps him protect Molly and avenge his death. Ghost The Musical breathes glorious new life into a timeless love story. The musical features an original pop score from multiple Grammy Award-winners Dave Stewart, one half of the 80s pop duo the Eurythmics, and Glen Ballard, co-writer with Alanis Morissette on the multi-platinum album Jagged Little Pill, among many other notable credits and collaborations.”

Why you can’t stop smiling during SISTER ACT on Broadway

May 1, 2013 By Nedra McDaniel 1 Comment

I went to see SISTER ACT on Broadway with my husband for a fun date night.

I had fond memories of the movie and was so excited to see the play. If you have seen the movie before, you will notice several of the nuns in the play who are spot on to several characters from the movie. The clashing of cultures between the nuns and Deloris made for so many comical moments and dialogue throughout the play. The nuns displayed a variety of personalities that really added to the performance. There were also several comical musical numbers from unlikely characters.  I won’t spoil it for you but there were several scenes that had my husband and I laughing outloud. I will give you a clue. The men displayed a lot of unexpected personality. SISTER ACT really is so fun and lighthearted. You would probably have to be half dead to not crack a smile during this show!

Here is a little bit more about the plot from Broadway .

When disco diva Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a murder, she is put in protective custody in the one place cops are sure she won’t be found – a convent! Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and an uptight Mother Superior. Using her fabulous disco- ness and killer voice to inspire the choir, Deloris breathes new life into the church, but in doing so blows her cover. Soon it’s nun-on-the-run time but she finds salvation in the heavenly power of her newly found sisterhood. Based on the mega-hit feature film, SISTER ACT features an original Alan Menken/Glenn Slater score with a vast inspiration of musical styles from Motown, soul and funk to great big disco anthems and Barry White inspired musical comedy.

Produced by Whoopi Goldberg, Stage Entertainment and Troika Entertainment, SISTER ACT received five 2011 Tony® Award nominations: BEST MUSICAL, BEST ORIGINAL SCORE (Alan Menken (music)/Glenn Slater (lyrics), BEST BOOK OF A MUSICAL (Cheri & Bill Steinkellner and Douglas Carter Beane), BEST ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL (Patina Miller) and BEST FEATURED ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL (Victoria Clark).

Why You Should See Million Dollar Quartet

February 20, 2013 By Nedra McDaniel Leave a Comment

My husband and I were blown away by the Broadway play Million Dollar Quartet. It went beyond my expectations and made me a HUGE fan! My husband’s grandparents were really into Johnny Cash and were even neighbors in Arkansas with him for a period of time.

I knew that my husband would appreciate the music, but I had no idea that I would walk away with a greater appreciation for these four amazing artists.

The international Tony® Award Winning musical, Million Dollar Quartet is set on December 4, 1956, when an auspicious twist of fate brought Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley together. Sam Phillips, the “Father of Rock ‘n’ Roll” who was responsible for launching the careers of each icon, brought the four legendary musicians together at the Sun Records storefront studio in Memphis for the first and only time. The resulting evening became known as one of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll jam sessions in history.

MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET brings that legendary night to life with an irresistible tale of broken promises, secrets, betrayal and celebrations featuring an eclectic score of rock, gospel, R&B and country hits including; “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Fever,” “Sixteen Tons,” “Who Do You Love?,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “Matchbox,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” “Hound Dog,” and more.

You can hear more about the show from some of the cast members.

Don’t miss out! You still have time to experience this amazing musical encounter.

I can honestly say that this play blew me away. It was above and beyond what I expected it to be and was so much fun to watch! I was partial to Elvis going into the show but the character of Jerry Lee Lewis really stole the show in my opinion. I really enjoyed how the play made you feel like you were getting unique insight into a piece of history.

The actors also play their own instruments and their showmanship is incredible!

This is a must see for anyone who grew up during that time period or any time period for that matter. I was familiar with most of the songs but for my parent’s generation, these songs are like replaying memories from their younger years.

MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET will play the Aronoff Center from February 19 –March 3, 2013: Tuesday- Friday at 8:00PM, Saturday at 2:00PM and 8:00PM, and Sunday at 1:00PM and 6:30PM.

Tickets for MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET begin at $28 and are available at the Aronoff Center Box Office downtown at 650 Walnut Street, online at CincinnatiArts.org or by phone at 513.621.ARTS.

For groups of 10 or more, contact the group sales department at 513.369.4363. Performance schedule, prices and cast are subject to change without notice.
