Tips for Attending the LEGO Creativity Tour

December 1, 2015 By Nedra McDaniel 1 Comment

Tips for Attending the LEGO Creativity Tour

My boys and I have enjoyed attending LEGO events over the years. We recently attended the LEGO Creativity Tour in Columbus, Ohio.

Each time that we attend a LEGO event, we enjoy HOURS of fun! The hardest part is knowing where to start and how to manage your time at each station.

Here are a few tips to make the most out of your experience.

Arrive on time – You will run out of time before you run out of fun. You want to be able to enjoy the event for as long as possible. Every year we have attended the event, the time flies by!

Allow extra time for parking and traffic- It’s better to have a little more margin than to miss some of your session because of downtown traffic or trying to find a good parking spot.

Check out the event map– It’s good to have an overview so that you don’t miss anything. There is A LOT to see and do! It’s worth checking out each area and then going back to the ones that your kids really like.

Play in the giant pile of LEGO bricks – You’ve stepped on them enough, why not enjoy it. It’s all the fun without the clean up!

LEGO Creativity Tour

Take a few opportunities to build something WITH your kids– I get it, sometimes you just need a little break and want to relax. There are plenty of chairs for you to sit on while you are watching your kids play but it’s good to also challenge yourself to participate in a few of the activities where you play and build WITH your kids too.

Participate in the team building games- Enjoy the friendly competitions and you also might get a prize to take home too.

Display your LEGO art– you have lots of opportunities to create and display what you build.

Let your kids know that there will be a LEGO store at the event– This can help them plan ahead if they have been saving up for a set. You might also want to designate a time to look. We typically do that at the very end so that we don’t have to carry additional bags and they have enough to play.

Take lots of pictures and video- You’ll be glad that you did. You will look back on these pictures one day and will be amazed at how much your kids have grown.

9 Reasons to Visit The World’s Largest Display of LEGO® Artwork

The first time that I saw the LEGO artwork sculpture “Yellow” by Nathan Sawaya was at Art Prize a few years ago in Grand Rapids, Michigan and I’ve been a fan ever since.

Our family went to see an incredible display of our Nation’s landmarks at the LEGO® Americana Roadshow at the Kenwood Towne Center in Cincinnati.

We LOVE to admire the creativity on display by LEGO Master builders. We’ve enjoyed LEGO Kidsfest and  LEGOland in Orlando in the past and always welcome any new opportunity to see a display.

Kids can get photo opps with helmets made from LEGO bricks, search from a list of items located in several themed scenes on display, create their own LEGO designs in the play area and can shop for items to complete their collection. Members of the OKILUG are always happy to share about their designs and the work that went into their display.

Kentucky Brick Expo April 27th & 28th

April 24, 2013 By Nedra McDaniel 17 Comments

My husband and I were invited to attend a OKILUG (Ohio,Kentucky, Indiana- LEGO User’s group) meetup last Saturday.

Did you know that there is a group for adults in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana that meets regularly to build with LEGO® bricks?

My biggest observation was that this club is all about community and sharing an interest in LEGO bricks. You don’t have to bring your own LEGO bricks or be extrememly creative to get involved with the club. There is a variety of skill and experience levels amoung the members. They gave us a simple project.

We put together pieces for part of the frozen lake layer for the upcoming show.

I first met Rodney, one of the orginal members of the club, with his mom at the LEGO Kidsfest in Louisville, KY. I recognized the logo on their shirts from an event we attended that the OKILUG was involved in.

What’s also really neat is that Rodney started building with LEGO bricks with his mom when he was 7 years old. This has been a shared hobby that has continued over the years.

You might remember some of the group’s creativity from the Shillito’s Elves Display at Newport on the Levee this past Christmas.

The OKILUG group is hosting an event that you don’t want to miss!

Here are some additional reasons for why you don’t want to miss the Kentucky Brick Expo!!!!!

*There will be over 5,000 sq. feet of LEGO built by club members. (That’s HUGE!!!!)

*There will be a youth area where kids can build and share ideas.

*There will a toddler area with Duplo blocks to build with.

*There will be a remote control area with a member that lets the fan participate.

*There will be a great display of Star Wars specializing in EWOKS! ( My personal fav from Star Wars)

*Cincinnati Bricks will be there with LEGO collectibles.

I’ve been given a family admission of 4 tickets to giveaway to the Expo

on either Saturday, April 27th or Sunday April 28th!

LEGO® Kidsfest

April 6, 2013 By Nedra McDaniel 2 Comments

We attended our first LEGO® Kidsfest in Louisville, KY. All I can say is WOW!

The biggest challenge is trying to decide where to go and to pace yourself so that you will have enough time to play and interact at all of the exhibits.
