Horseback riding is a such a fun experience to try year round.
I’ll admit that I’ve had a few previous experiences that have made me a little nervous around horses.
One tried to buck me off in Wyoming when I was a teenager and I tend to get the rebel horse that doesn’t want to do what it’s supposed to.
A team building encounter with horses in Michigan helped prep my boys and I for their first real trail horseback riding experience at First Farm Inn in Petersburg, Kentucky.
First Farm in is located in northern Kentucky and is just 20 minutes from downtown Cincinnati.
First Farm Inn is a bed and breakfast at a renovated 1870’s farmhouse that also offers horseback riding.
You can stay at the B & B and ride or come just to ride.
Safety is a priority at this stable and all riders are required to wear a helmet. I’ve opted not to wear a helmet in the past but I was kind of relieved that my vanity of not wanting to wear a helmet was overruled.
We began our experience by first becoming more familiar with the horses that we would be riding.
My younger son did not feel confident enough to ride by himself. Jen, who is the owner and was also our guide, tethered him to her horse which helped give him more confidence.
We started our ride by getting more comfortable on the horses in the pen.
After the boys felt more comfortable, we rode in the field and trotted for a little while.
Our trail ride had a great variety of wooded areas and open fields that extended all over the 21-acre property.
My younger son rode Sunny, registered half Arab and Quarter horse gelding.
My older son rode Koda, a Mustang gelding and I rode Sam who is a Tennessee Walker gelding.
Sam was a slower-paced horse and I was totally ok with that.
Each horse had a great temperament and was the perfect fit for us as more inexperienced riders.
After we finished our ride, the kids had fun on the tire and rope swing. They also had a great time kicking the soccer ball trying to score goals on Jen’s dog.
He was an intense goalie and my kids could have seriously played with him all day!
I got a quick tour of the lower level of the bed and breakfast during my visit. Each room has lots of great art and Jen also has interesting stories about a lot of the pieces.
My boys and I really enjoyed our horseback riding adventure at First Farm Inn.
I know they will feel even more confident to ride in the future because of our positive experience.
