Iron Gate Bed & Breakfast
708 E Main St, Madison, IN
If you love the hospitality of a bed and breakfast, you’ll want to consider a stay at Iron Gate Bed & Breakfast in downtown Madison.
The bed and breakfast is only a few blocks from downtown shops and the Ohio River.
The circa 1840 Federal Mansion home was designed by the same architect who built the Lanier Mansion.
The Iron Gate Inn was previously the single-family home of Mr. Pitcher whose picture is displayed in the entry hallway.
This was one of the first homes in Madison to have running water and the iron gate you pass through in front of the home is original.
Upon arrival, you’ll immediately notice the large front door, and Melodie, the Innkeeper will help you feel at home, from the moment you enter it.
She’ll also give you an overview of the home and show you some of the home’s unique features, including the 10 ft tall china cabinet in the grand parlor with a door that opens toward the ceiling.
The inn also has modern conveniences and security including free WIFI, modern electronic locks to access the front door, and outside perimeter cameras.
The grand parlor has 13-foot tall ceilings and 11-foot tall Jefferson windows.
Guests can use the grand parlor to relax, read, or chat with other overnight guests during their stay.
Other common areas include the side porch and the patio, which is lit up for guests at night.
The former carriage house for the home now functions as a garage.
Each of the four bedrooms has a distinct personality and a private bathroom.
One bedroom is on the main floor and three bedrooms at the bed and breakfast are on the second floor via the staircase.
Keep that in mind, if you’re traveling with a guest with mobility issues.
The Secret Garden Suite on the main floor was previously the original summer kitchen in the home.
The St. Michaels Room at Iron Gate Inn Bed & Breakfast
We stayed in the St. Micheals Room with a king-size bed.
There are blackout curtains and a box fan in the closet to help block out any noise if you’re a light sleeper.
This room overlooks Main Street and has a smart TV, a desk, two chairs, and a small table.
The room has a private bathroom with a vintage claw foot high-step tub/shower combo and a separate toilet.
Guests on the second floor have access to a butler’s pantry off the hallway stocked with coffee, and tea, and a small refrigerator to store your leftovers from a meal out or your drinks.
Breakfast at the Iron Gate Inn Bed and Breakfast
If you stay at the bed and breakfast during the weekend you’ll be treated to a candlelight breakfast.
Your meal is served on fine china starting with a bowl of fruit, pastry, entree, coffee, tea, and juice.
Guests who stay during the weekday will have a simpler American-style breakfast plated on white dinnerware served with coffee, tea, and juice.
We were treated to two candlelight breakfasts during our 2-night weekend stay.
Come to the table with a healthy appetite because their breakfast is filling.
My friend who joined me on the trip is gluten-free and we were happy to discover that the inn offers gluten-free breakfast options for guests upon request.
She was also excited that Madison offers so many gluten-free menu options at the local restaurants in town.
