Adventures East of Cleveland in Lake County, Ohio

July 31, 2021 By Nedra McDaniel Leave a Comment

East of Cleveland, you’ll find a gem of an area for outdoor adventure in Lake County, Ohio. Lake County is located on the southern shore of Lake Erie with four main cities including Willoughby, Mentor, Painesville, and Madison.

Our family experienced a variety of what the area has to offer, made lots of memories, and enjoyed quality time together.

During a recent visit to the Sandusky area, we found out about freighters that were frozen in Lake Erie near the bay in Huron, Ohio.

We immediately knew that we wanted to capture some shots of the freighters before and during sunrise. The first challenge was finding a close location to view them from.

Our first location involved a large fence and huge, giant, mounds of snow.

But….that didn’t stop us from taking pictures.

Our second location got even better.

Thanks to my fellow travel bloggers (Far Flung Travels, Shalee Wanders, The Traveling Praters and Happiness is a hot pierogi) for joining me on this early morning adventure.

The views were worth the early wake up.

Frozen Views of the Ohio River

Frozen Ohio River 4

There are some situations that you have to take advantage of in that moment, otherwise you could miss out on them forever.

Frozen Ohio River 1

How many times do we see something and think that we will get back to it only to discover that we forgot about it or we no longer have time to do it or that the moment is no longer there.

Frozen Ohio River 5

I was faced with one of those moments on my way to Sandusky, Ohio. I was driving across the bridge from Northern Kentucky into Cincinnati, Ohio and I noticed how incredible the Ohio River looked frozen over. I was on my way out of town and I knew that there was a good chance that this scene would not be waiting for me when I returned so I decided to quickly deviate my route and take a few minutes to get a few shots of this incredible wonder.

Frozen Ohio River 2

I grew up in the area and this is not a scene that I can recall many times in my lifetime.

Frozen Ohio River 3

I still arrived at my destination on time….but first I had to stop for one more frozen view. This time it was to see 98% frozen Lake Erie in the backyard of Sawmill Creek Resort.

Hope you get to take a little time to enjoy the view where you are.

Our 1st Airboat Ride on Lake Erie with Air 1 Airboats

January 12, 2015 By Nedra McDaniel 3 Comments

An Airboat ride has been on my adventure list for a while. I always pictured my 1st airboat ride going through the Everglades.

Little did I know that my 1st airboat ride would be on one of the Great Lakes, specifically Lake Erie.  I first found out about Air1Airboats during a media trip to Sandusky.

I was immediately intrigued because I knew that I would be back in the area a few months later.

What it's like to Surf the Great Lakes

During a media trip to Lake Erie Shores and Islands, I met Chad and Ryan Whaley from Green Door Media Works. You might also remember these brothers from a previous interview that Chad gave about the Volstead Speakeasy Bar that he and his brother started together in Sandusky.

Kayaking in Cleveland

May 26, 2014 By Nedra McDaniel 5 Comments

Kayaking in Cleveland

There are a lot of misconceptions out there about Cleveland’s water. You might remember hearing about the Cuyahoga river that feeds into Lake Erie burning most recently in the late 60’s.
