My husband and I visited FRP LaGrange Quarry, but we didn’t fully know what to expect on our first visit.
We decided to visit the quarry on our way back home to the Cincinnati Metro after spending a few nights in Louisville, KY.
I’m sharing more about important tips and what you need to know about FRP LaGrange Quarry before you go.

How Big is the FRP La Grange Quarry?
The FRP LaGrange Quarry covers 7 acres, and the depth is around 55+ feet. There are a few shallow areas but in general the water gets deep pretty quickly.
To my surprise, the water temperature on the surface felt great and refreshing, and I don’t like cold water.
A few scuba divers told us that the water temperatures were frigid around 20 feet below the surface, even with thicker suits on.
FYI- You must be a certified scuba diver to dive at the quarry, complete a scuba waiver, and have a scuba buddy with you at all times.
FRP LaGrange Quarry is for Ages 18 and Up Only
The FRP LaGrange Quarry is for adults only, which is actually kind of nice. There are no lifeguards on duty, and visitors enter at their own risk.
Pets aren’t permitted. The only exception is a specifically trained service animal that is assisting a guest with a disability.
It’s nice that you can float and not worry about any boats on the water… or floating away. No fishing is allowed, but there are still fish in the quarry that you could see.
You Must Have a Flotation Device
Anytime you’re in the water, you must have a flotation device.
Most of the guests during our visit had a pool float or a pool noodle to use in the water.
If you want to swim laps, you still have to have a floating device near you.
What Are the Facilities Like at FRP LaGrange Quarry?
I checked about what type of bathrooms they had before we arrived. They only have port-o-lets, which is important to note if you tend to avoid them at all costs.
There are areas where you can change your clothes that have a curtain for privacy.
I would suggest having a friend nearby to make sure that the curtain stays closed.
Inflate Your Floats Onsite
Guests can inflate their floats with a complimentary air compressor at the Surf Shack area.
Dive Platforms
There are several areas where you can jump into the quarry at your own risk. You are still required to have a flotation device nearby if you’re jumping.
I would suggest bringing a pool noodle if you plan on jumping because it’s less awkward to carry it up the ladder to the top of the platform.
I was impressed with the supportive vibe for anyone brave enough to jump off the red platform, with cheers when they faced their fears.
Swimming Platforms
There are several swimming platforms in the quarry for guests to enjoy during their visit.
Rentals at FRP LaGrange Quarry
There are rentals for life jackets, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and pedal boats.
Download Your Waiver Before You Arrive
Save your time and sanity by filling out your waiver online in advance.
It’s hard to get a signal at the quarry, which means you’ll need to leave and come back once you have your online waiver completed.
There isn’t a paper option because the waiver requires uploading a picture of your government-issued ID or driver’s license.
We ended up driving a few miles up the road and refreshed the browsers on our phones.
What to Bring to FRP LaGrange Quarry
We packed our inflatable stand-up paddleboards and pool rafts. It was fun to paddle the quarry, but I’m also glad I brought the type of hammock pool float that allowed me to relax in the water.
An inflatable kayak would be fun in the quarry, too.
I brought our camping chairs, but we didn’t use them because we spent the whole time in the water.
You really want water shoes, especially on a hot day. The gravel/sand gets hot, and you don’t want to burn or tear up your feet if you exit the quarry on the same side as the food shack.
Sunscreen is a must! I’d suggest wearing a rash guard if you’re sensitive to the sun. You can bring beach umbrellas too.
We brought a small soft cooler with reusable ice packs for our non-alcoholic drinks. You’re allowed to bring food too
Any ice in a cooler must be in a bag. You can purchase food and drinks onsite.
Our car keys and cell phones were kept in a dry bag attached to my paddleboard with a carabiner.
If you want to keep your phone close by, I suggest using a floating cell phone case. For video we also brought our Insta360 X4.
We inflated our stand-up paddleboards by the car, but we deflated and rolled them back up near the grass at the entrance of the quarry.
Serenity Island Area
We didn’t notice that there was an island for guests to lounge on until we walked the perimeter of the quarry.
Guests walk across a bridge to access the island. In hindsight, I would have paddled around the island.
There’s also a basketball hoop in a shallow area of the water near Serenity Island.
Play Sand Volleyball
If you need a break from the water, there’s a sand volleyball court for guests to use.
They Will Do a Thorough Search of Your Vehicle
The website mentioned that no outside alcohol or drugs are allowed, and if you’re caught with them, you will be ejected from the facility and you won’t get a refund.
If you don’t agree to a search of your belongings or vehicle, you’ll have to leave without a refund because it’s private property.
I didn’t expect two employees to go through our car, bags, and luggage upon arrival.
We had to step out of our vehicle while we watched them open all the zippers of our bags, the cooler, the backpacks, and look under the seats, etc.
I wasn’t thrilled about a stranger rummaging through a suitcase with my dirty laundry from our road trip, but I understand they were just doing their job. There is no re-entry, so once you leave, you can’t return.
Heads Up- Their Online Pricing Was Very Confusing
It’s odd for a business to offer online reservation tickets that only cover a portion of the admission price. You are also charged in person upon arrival, which is why I was very confused when we checked in.
When you reserve and pay for your tickets online, you are NOT “paid in full” upon arrival.
I reserved our discounted tickets online and thought I was done with the process because the receipt sent to my email said the order status was “paid in full” when I scanned it for our tickets.
It was easy to see how I missed the mention of an additional $20 per person upon arrival after examining my email a day later.
I thought I was saving money because tickets were discounted online… but I was also charged service fees from a third party, additional service fees for using a credit card, and then more fees for using my credit card and taxes when I was charged $20 per person upon arrival.
I debated with my husband about how much we paid that day because it ended up being more than double what I originally thought I was paying for admission.
Our total for 2 people on a Saturday was $40.96 per person, including third-party fees, taxes, and credit card fees, which honestly shocked me when I received two receipts.
You can also pay $45 per person in cash when you arrive if you don’t make an online reservation.
It was a much pricier adventure than I originally anticipated, so lesson learned. For the best value, arrive when they open and stay until they close.
VIP Areas at FRP LaGrange Quarry
VIP sites are located around the perimeter of the quarry and vary in price and size.
The price for each VIP area is by the site, not per person, but everyone at the site must purchase admission to the quarry.
If you’re visiting with a large group, this might be a nice option because it includes a picnic table and closer parking for at least 1 vehicle.
