My personal experience with golf is that I’m better off driving the golf cart ….but I do like the driving range.
I was invited to preview Top Golf’s newest location in West Chester, Ohio. I was curious about the giant structure that I had seen from the expressway. I didn’t have a prior knowledge of Top Golf so I assumed that it was for people that were really serious about golf.
I discovered that wasn’t the case. Great golfers are welcome there …but so are sub par golfers…and kids!
I can’t say that my golf skills really improved during my visit, but I can say that I had a blast trying. (I might have learned that form pictured below from Happy Gilmore)
So what is Top Golf?
Topgolf is the premier golf entertainment complex where the competition of sport meets your favorite local hangout. You can challenge your friends and family to addictive point-scoring golf games that anyone from the hopeful pro golfer to your neighbor’s 7-year-old kid can play year-round.
Just picture a 240-yard outfield with dartboard-like targets in the ground. The closer to the center or “bull’s-eye” you get and the farther out you hit your microchipped balls, the more points you receive.
Each bay can have up to 6 players. I would recommend bringing friends because it’s more fun and it’s also a better value. You are charged by the bay by the hour, not the person, and you have waitstaff so you can eat and drink while you play.
The atmosphere while playing a game at Top Golf reminded me of bowling. There are clubs already supplied at your bay if you need them. You can get lefty clubs on special request. We chose a simple game from the selection on the screen that has us focus on trying to hit the targets with the ball. Picture golf meet darts. The golf ball has a chip in it so it keeps tabs on where it landed and displays a reading on the computer screen.
If we had someone SUPER competitive in our group it might have changed the dynamic a bit, but the overall vibe of this place is making golf FUN!
Everyone at our table enjoyed hanging out, eating and drinking as we rotated turns.
Speaking of food, the menu at Top Golf is chef driven, so you will enjoy the twist on American classics.
For dessert, we tried the injectable donut holes. You can choose 2 flavors for your cinnamon-sugar dusted donut holes:chocolate, raspberry jelly or Bavarian creme. I think the Bavarian creme was my favorite.
Topgolf is a first come first serve venue and reservations are not needed. Top golf is also a great venue for private and corporate parties.
The bays are climate controlled so that you can play year round. When it’s chilly, there are infrared heaters and when it’s muggy, there are cooling misters. Reservations are first come, first serve but you can take advantage of the restaurant and bar area if you have to wait.
There are plenty of tv’s located around the bar and at each bay so you don’t have to worry about missing the big game.
The lower level of Top Golf has bays and a game room that is FREE to use for patrons as they wait.
The top level has a rooftop bar and a great lounge and game area.
As it gets darker, the targets light up and are even syncronized to music.
I’ve never really associated golf with fun but Topgolf really creates an atmosphere that is enjoyable for all ages and skill levels.
