Summer Fun at Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park

I’ve visited Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park in West Michigan multiple times over the years in both the winter for the ice skating trail and the luge and in the summer for the wheel luge track.

The adventure park continues to build and expand each season. They provide unique opportunities for visitors to step outside of their comfort zone and connect with nature through outdoor adventure.

Learn How to Luge Before You Go

Of course, it can be a bit intimidating to go to speeds up to 25mph on a sled, feet first. Trust me, the unique experience is worth facing your fears!

This is where the luge coaches come in.

Your luge coach will demonstrate everything that you need to do thoroughly before you even think about going down the track.

They also make sure that you understand the position you need to hold on the sled. Your coach will take the time to make sure you understand and feel comfortable with the turn positions with your body on the sled before you go down.

Each luge participant is provided with a helmet, sled, and elbow pads to use for their ride on the track.

Once you are on your way down the luge track, they will call out voice commands to help you go down safely.

I was really impressed with our coach Micah. She was REALLY enthusiastic, patient, and encouraging throughout the whole process. She gave us positive feedback after each run and told us minor adjustments to improve for the next time.

You Only Need 10 Seconds of Bravery

The wheel luge experience only lasts about 10 seconds total. The bravest thing you do might be telling your coach that you are ready to go down. Once you are in motion it’s over quickly.

I had previously tried the summer luge as a birthday adventure with my kids and friends about 10 years ago. I’m glad that I tried it again to test my courage at an older age.

The only difference between the winter luge sled and summer luge sled is the in-line wheels attached to the bottom of the sled.

During your ride, you’ll experience two banked curves on the 320 ft. long track. The track was designed by American Olympian, Frank Masely, who competed in 3 different Winter Olympics in the ’80s.

If you go on the winter luge track its 850 ft long, covered in ice, and can reach speeds up to 30mph!

How Do You Stop on the Wheel Luge Track?

At the bottom of the wheel luge track, there are multiple crash pads. The crash pads will help you slow your speed down safely.

There is an additional luge coach at the bottom of the track to help you if you need any assistance getting up.

1400 ft Dune Top Dual Zip Line at Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park

Race a Friend on the 1400 ft Dune Top Dual Zip Line

The dual 1400 ft zip line allows you to race a friend as you go, making the experience even more fun!

Your zipline adventure starts at the top of a Lake Michigan sand dune. One of the guides will assist you with your harness and then you will take several flights of stairs up to the top platform. (The extra cardio is worth it.)

In addition to the views of the treetops at Muskegon State Park, you’ll travel over both the winter and summer luge tracks on your way to the platform.

The zipline has an automatic braking system. I prefer this type of zip line because you can just hold on and enjoy the ride without the stress of being responsible for slowing yourself down by hand braking.

A run on the zipline lasts about 50 seconds- 1-minute. If you are scared of heights, you just need 1 minute of bravery or 3 seconds to step off the platform to start the zipline experience.

Learn How To Shoot A Bow and Arrow at the Archery Range

I’ve tried archery a few times prior to my visit but my experience at Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park was definitely my most successful attempt at hitting the targets. I got all 5 of my arrows on the board in a row, thanks to tips from my instructor, Tom.

He was extremely detailed, attentive to safety protocols, and patient while teaching us how to use a lightweight compound bow. He explained how to achieve the correct form, posture, and process in a way that was easier for me to comprehend and remember than my previous experiences.

The instruction process for the group takes about 10-15 minutes. After that, you will have multiple rounds to attempt to shoot the targets with 5 arrows each time.

Challenge Yourself on Trail Quest

A hybrid of an escape room, geocaching, and a scavenger hunt, Trail Quest will put your team to the test.

You’ll want to allow time for this adventure that takes you on the hiking trails of over 300 acres of Muskegon State Park. Most participants walk 1.5 to 3 miles while playing Trail Quest and the best kind of exercise is the kind you do while having fun.

How to Play Trail Quest

You need at least two teams of two or more people.

Each team gets a map with checkpoints throughout the park that have a location of a locked box with a token inside worth points. Before you unlock the box, you have to solve a riddle.

You want to collect as many points as possible before your set amount of time runs out.

Trail Quest is a great way to get families active outdoors or for anyone who is competitive that likes a challenge.

What to Wear at Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park in the Summer

I would suggest wearing athletic clothing that moves and breathes. If you plan on ziplining and going on the wheel luge, you may be more comfortable in athletic shorts or Capri-style leggings. The harness for the zipline tends to ride up shorts. For the wheel luge, you will be sitting up and then laying down on the sled.
