I’m going to start with a confession. I don’t enjoy cooking unless it’s social or has a theme to inspire. Unfortunately, thinking of what to cook everyday is not festive enough for me to get inspired……but a cooking class that is social and is an excuse to try something new ……..is the perfect way to consider maybe wanting to cook a few more meals in the future.  This is where Chef Dan comes in.

Bolly Bears Indian Cooking Class

My friend Cate invited me to experience an Indian cooking class with some of her coworkers. Several of them had taken a class before and wanted to try a new one.  I was definitely up for the opportunity to eat good food even if I had to help make it. Our class gave each of us the opportunity to jump in and help make a yellow base curry and then a Saag and Tikka Masala from that base.

We got to see the process from start to finish and learned why quality spices are really important to maximizing the flavor of your meal.

During our cooking process, we got to test our hand strength by trying to see who could ring out the most water out of a bunch of spinach for our Saag dish.

I was not the winner but I think I was in the top 3 for water extraction. Gotta hit the gym more for next time.

The eating was the best part and it was really cool to be able to say I was involved in the process. We also sampled the difference in the taste of Saag that was stewed for several hours.  Stewing is an important part of the Indian dish that is recommended for about 2-4 hours.

My friend and I also had to top ours with A LOT more heat because we LOVE spicy food.

A cooking class is a fun excuse to be social and try something that could be a bit out of your comfort zone.

I really enjoyed our experience and it was great to meet new people in our class too.

Several of the other class participants had never even tried Indian food before but found out that they really enjoyed it.

The class also gives you the recipe and a DVD to take home so that you can test your cooking skills at home.

I took their class several years ago. It was fun! I wonder if they are still there doing classes?

I know that Indian food uses 5 base spices but treats them in different ways for flavors. I would like to see what it is they do to these to get the flavor they achieve.

I love Indian food and it is the one thing I have never tried to make before. I don’t know why it is intimidating to me. I would love to learn. My best friend and I both like to cook and we both enjoy Indian food, neither one of us has made it before though. Would be great!
