When I learned about the Kentucky gas station with a disco bathroom, I knew that I had to experience it in person.
When you walk into the HOPS Shops gas station store there is nothing out of the ordinary. It’s clean… which is always desirable for a gas station stop and has a variety of typical convenience store items, including snacks and drinks.
The same applies to the bathroom at first glance. It isn’t obvious that it’s a disco bathroom if you don’t already know about it.
There’s a good chance that you could use the restroom, wash your hands, and leave the bathroom without even noticing the large red button. Or you may not push the button because you assume it’s for emergencies, etc.

Normally, I’m a total rule follower. I wouldn’t want the deal with the embarrassment of pushing the button if something crazy happened after I pushed it.
I had the advantage of knowing about the coolest bathroom ahead of time so I knew that it was okay to ignore my rule-following instincts and push the button next to the “Do Not Push This Red Button” sign with a frog winking.
My friend and I strategically made the disco bathroom the first stop on our road trip and the last stop of our road trip on our way back.
We made sure that no one else was in the bathroom so that we could document our experience without dragging a stranger into it.
I pushed the button and we waited…

The bathroom goes dark for a few seconds and then you hear the music while the disco ball and lights transform the bathroom into a fun atmosphere.
If you plan on pushing the button you might want to make sure that no one is in a stall or give them a heads up for what’s about to happen if they walk in.
Afterward, the lights come back on like nothing ever happened.
As we were leaving the bathroom a few older women walked in and we asked them if they knew about the red button.
They didn’t know about the red button and we offered to push it for them…and they didn’t want us to.
I can’t blame them, I typically don’t approach strangers in the bathroom. We understood their hesitation and encouraged them to push the red button while they were in the bathroom after we left.
I saw the woman at the checkout and asked her if she pushed the red button and she said that she did with a big smile on her face.
It’s honestly hard to keep a straight face when a bathroom break turns into a fun and random disco.
