During my visit with Lake Erie Shores and Islands, we spent an evening exploring Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve.
We were staying next door at Sawmill Creek Resort that evening, which is a nice walk or short drive from the preserve.
Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve and contiguous wetlands comprise some of the last remaining undeveloped stretches of shoreline in the Sandusky Bay region.
What to Look for at Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve
This area draws close to 300 bird species, plants, and animals associated with its marsh ego system.
That evening our group was joined by Jeff and Debra Herzog. They have a passion for nature and did a great job drawing us in to take in and appreciate all of our surroundings.
They were able to distinguish bird calls and point out animals that we could have easily overlooked.
The scenery felt like it could have been out of a movie.
We followed this inviting path to the beach.
Where to Surf in Sandusky in the Fall
We were told that this is a great spot for surfing.
If you want to catch waves you have to wait until the fall which means you will definitely need a wetsuit.
From the beach we could see Cedar Point in the distance. We also noticed a crane in the water nearby.
Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve is a great place to slow down and appreciate your surroundings.
There is no fee to visit the preserve but the views are priceless!
