Dining in a Former Classroom at The Schoolhouse Restaurant

The Schoolhouse Restaurant is a dining destination that I’ve had on my list for almost a year.

The Schoolhouse Restaurant

The Schoolhouse Restaurant offers a unique dining experience inside the former classroom of a school that was in operation from the 1860s-1940s.

This school was also believed to be the 1st schoolhouse in the midwest to feature a 2nd story which housed the auditorium and principal’s office.

The chalkboard in the dining area displays the menu that includes specials, craft beer, and wine in a room filled with historic reminders of years past.

The Schoolhouse is known for their fried chicken and comfort foods that will remind you of grandma.

You choose the meats and the refillable sides are served family style on a Lazy Susan that’s built into your table.

We started with the House dressing that’s a unique take on French dressing. It’s delicious, the sweet flavor has been a popular Miller family recipe for years who have been operating the restaurant for over 50 years.

The coleslaw is chopped fine and also has a sweet flavor. It definitely reminded me of the south where everything is better with sugar!

I opted for the roast beef and my husband went with the fried chicken.

You can choose all white, all dark meat, or to mix it up.

Our server, Lindsey, did a great job of sharing about the process and the menu items.

She also brought us some corn fritters that were a hybrid of a fritter and a hushpuppy.

They were delicious! She said to try them with butter and honey but you could even enjoy them on their own.

The food was like going to visit both of our southern grandma’s for a home-cooked meal …(or Mammaw’s as my husband’s family refers to his grandmother.)

The homestyle green beans, fried chicken, and cornbread felt like a homecoming in the best way.

The manager, who was also the next generation of the Miller family working in the business, informed us that we needed to try the peanut butter pie and sent us a complimentary piece to our table.

We did our due diligence by trying it even though we were beyond stuffed.

The pie was worth every bite.

We boxed up our leftovers that easily made another meal for the following day.

I really loved the whole experience.

Make sure that you notice the memorabilia that’s in the case by the register on your way out. I was told that family members have dropped off items that belonged to students who attended school there.

The lunch prices are great for large families on a budget and a bike ride along the trail behind the restaurant would make a great date or family adventure.

If you get there and need to wait for a table, you can kill time at the nearby gift shop, by viewing the goats, or by challenging your dinner guest to a friendly game of tetherball. There is also a playground for younger guests.

The Schoolhouse Restaurant

The Schoolhouse Restaurant is the only school your kids will want to go to year round!

If you get a chance to go for lunch on a Friday, do not miss their fish sandwich. Best fish sandwich I’ve ever had. And once during Lent a couple years ago, they did a lunch special with hand breaded popcorn shrimp and those were fantastic.
