I LOVE to try extreme adventures that are in a controlled environment.
I’m all about reducing the risks and the pain that I could possibly experience.
That’s why indoor skydiving is the best of both worlds!
You get to experience the thrill of skydiving without the additional risks of jumping out of a plane at iFLY.
I’ve previously experienced LOTS of extreme adventures… that are still attainable, coming from a wimp at heart. Over the years, I’ve just learned to do things looking stupid or scared.
Jumping off the stratosphere with a harness
White water rafting but it made me sooo nervous
I was invited to experience iFly Cincinnati for the first time with my “little” from Big Brothers Big Sisters.
Since my first visit, I’ve also come back to share my friend’s first indoor skydive.
What Should I Wear to Indoor Skydive at iFLY?
I would recommend wearing athletic clothing.
Flyers are required to wear a flight suit over their clothing and you don’t want a lot of extra bulk under your suit.
*The flight suit has handles that help the instructor guide you during your flight.
If you have longer hair like me you will want to pull it back in a hair tie too.
How Much Time Should You Allow For an Adventure at iFLY?
The iFLY experience lasts about 1.45 hours in total.
The iFLY process includes the amount of time includes your check-in, training session, flight, removal of gear, and time to look at photos and video if you choose to purchase them.
You will stand on a scale in front of an employee as part of your check-in process and thankfully that information is only visible to the employee who is checking you in.
*There are typically several people in each flight session.
You can fill out your waiver online ahead of time to help save time during your check in process.
All first-timers are required to attend the training session prior to their flight. If you book a return flight within three months you don’t need to attend the training session.
There is plenty of seating for observers to watch around the wind tunnel.
Hand Signals To Look For During Your Flight at iFLY
You will be trained on four important hand signals that will be used during your flight from the iFLY instructor.
- Relax- a reminder to breathe
- Leg Straight
- Chin Up
- Legs Bent
The iFLY Flight Experience
I did go into this adventure with some previous experience at Flyaway Indoor Skydiving, America’s first vertical wind tunnel in Pigeon Forge, TN.
The technology has changed a LOT over the years which made for two experiences that were both similar yet also very different.
During your flight, your flight instructor will teach you how to make your body fly. It takes a little while for your body and brain to catch up to what you are experiencing as you learn to indoor skydive.
There were several times that I thought that my legs were more bent than they were in reality on video.
One of the big differences was the way that I entered and exited the tunnel. This is one flyer at a time with their instructor.
Entering and exiting the wind tunnel is also very easy.
I could not stop SMILING the whole entire time! Its such an incredible experience!
The wind tunnel isn’t overwhelming and you can still easily breathe. Compare it to how it feels when you put your head outside your car window while driving.
My experience in the wind tunnel during the flight was very smooth. For the best experience, look for the signals from your flight instructors and make the adjustments in gradual movements.
How Long is Your Flight in the Vertical Wind Tunnel at iFLY?
Each flight in the wind tunnel at iFLY lasts 60 seconds.
For context, if you were jumping out of a plane, the free-fall portion is around 45 seconds.
You get to skip the plane ride and have more time in the tunnel.
There are flight packages that have two flights, which equals two turns in the wind tunnel for 60 seconds each.
Will you do Tricks or Flips During Your Flight?
Sorry, tricks and flips are for more experienced flyers, not first timers.
There are opportunities to advance if you decide that you want to improve your skills in the future.
We watched our instructor show off advanced skills in the tunnel after our flights.
Should I Pay Extra for the High Flight at iFLY?
In my opinion, YES! It was such an incredible experience to go so high up in the wind tunnel.
I was able to fly higher and faster with my instructor than I would have been able to on my own.
The high flight experience is during the last 15-20 seconds of your final flight.
*High flights may not be available to guests that are over 260 lbs or to guests with certain restrictions. Check with your instructor for more info.
Can You Take iFLY Lessons?
If you want to take your indoor skydiving skills to the next level, you can book a coaching lesson from the pros.
How High Do You Go Indoor Skydiving?
Typically about 10- 20 feet above the net at the bottom in the wind tunnel.
Can I Take My Kid Indoor Skydiving at iFLY?
Kids as young as 3 years old can try indoor skydiving at iFLY.
*Anyone under 18 will need a parent or guardian to sign their waiver.
Is There An Age Limit for Indoor Skydiving at iFLY?
No, so bring your grandparent or be the coolest senior citizen ever!
They’ve even had a 96 year old fly at the iFLY Ohio location!
Is there a weight restriction for Indoor Skydiving at iFLY?
Flyers must weigh less than 300 pounds.
If you weigh between 260 and 300 pounds you must bring this to the attention of an iFLY representative as additional restrictions and instructor scheduling limitations may apply.
All Abilities Night at iFLY
After my flight I learned about All Abilities Night while talking to an iFLY employee.
iFLY also does special flights for guests with physical challenges or cognitive challenges.
This especially tugs at my heart because my only sibling had special needs (cerebral palsy) and these flights give someone like my brother who was in a wheelchair the opportunity to do something beyond their physical limits.
I LOVE that iFLY is an inclusive adventure that also provides opportunities for the special needs community to experience the gift of flight too.
