I added Ocean City, Maryland to the RV itinerary during the planning phase of our trip because it was an area that we had never visited before.
I also wanted to see the wild horses at Assateague National Park which had been on my travel bucket list for quite some time.
This leg of our itinerary was rated highly by every family member and I would highly recommend a visit to Ocean City if you are on the fence.
So why should you want to add Ocean City to your list?
See Wild Horses at Assateague Island National Seashore
We drove straight to the National Park from our previous location in Pittsburgh. We wanted to see the ocean after spending a large portion of our day traveling and I REALLY wanted to see a wild horse.
That dream came true within a few moments as we noticed a wild horse walking on the side of the road as we were driving into the park.
There are around 90 wild horses on the island. They are WILD so make sure that you keep your distance from them and do not approach them.
You have two options when you visit Assateague, you can go to the State Park or the National Park.
We chose to visit the Assateague Island National Seashore Park because we could use my dad’s National Park Senior Pass for free entry.
Enjoy some time on the Beach
As a barrier island, the landscape is constantly changing. The views were absolutely gorgeous and I appreciated the lack of crowds during our visit.
My boys had a blast jumping the waves and I even joined them for a few minutes. We loved relaxing by the ocean without an agenda, which is a change of pace from our typical itineraries.
Explore Ocean City, Maryland
We picked an overcast day to explore Ocean City during our visit because we prefer to hang out on the beach when the weather is good.
Where to Park an RV in Ocean City
Parking can be challenging to find closer to the boardwalk, but the good news is that you have a great option.
After searching for a lunch spot and struggling to find parking, I approached an officer to find out what our options were. He directed me to the West Ocean City Park & Ride located at 12848 Ocean Gateway.
Parking is FREE and there are plenty of parking spaces. The walk across the bridge is scenic and takes about 25 minutes to return to the Boardwalk area.
If you don’t want to walk, you can contact an Uber or take the shuttle from the parking lot for a minimal fee.
Where to Eat in Ocean City
There are plenty of wonderful places to dine in Ocean City. During our visit, we stumbled upon Angler Food & Spirits. Not only was the food great, but the restaurant was also a great value for families.
You can also enjoy a 45-minute scenic boat cruise for only $3 pp with any $12 or more lunch or dinner food purchase. The Crab Imperial and Topside Tacos were a hit at our table.
The restaurant is located on the dock of the bay which creates a relaxing atmosphere.
Later that evening we decided to get popcorn at Fisher’s Popcorn on the Boardwalk.
After a few samples, each of us had different preferences. I would suggest ordering the smallest popcorn bag for each person.
It’s the perfect amount of popcorn and everyone was happy because they got their flavor of choice. I loved the Old Bay Dusted Caramel that was a fantastic blend of sweet and spice.
What to Do in Ocean City
Explore the Boardwalk at Ocean City
The Boardwalk at Ocean City is 3 miles full of shops, restaurants, hotels, and attractions. You can find activities on the Boardwalk day or night.
There is a Life-Saving Station Museum for history lovers and a Ripley’s Believe it or Not Museum for those who enjoy quirky oddities on the Boardwalk.
For another perspective pay a nominal fee of $.50 to walk farther out on the pier. We enjoyed watching the fishermen in action and observing their catch of the day.
Take a Scenic Boat Cruise
A Scenic Boat Cruise is a wonderful way to take in another perspective of Ocean City. The boat typically used for the nature cruise had an issue so we got to ride on the OC Rocket instead…which we were pretty happy about.
During our boat ride, we had a few dolphin sightings and a few good waves in the channel.
You really can’t beat the value of the deal at Angler if you are going to eat out and want to do a tour anyway!
Walk the Boardwalk at Night
The Boardwalk offers thrill levels for all ages with a variety of amusement rides and from May 27- Sunday, September 3rd, you can catch a nightly light display called “100 Nights of Lights” on the boardwalk near Division Street starting at 9pm and ending at 11pm.
An Amazing RV Park Near Ocean City
We stayed 3 nights at Frontier Town located at 8428 Stephen Decatur Highway, Berlin. I was REALLY impressed with this western themed campground!
Located 6 minutes from Assateague Island and less than 15 minutes from the Ocean City Boardwalk.
We visited midweek in the early season but Frontier Town does offer a Beach Shuttle that runs daily during peak season (June 11 – September 5) to Ocean City and Assateague Island and Saturdays only in the Spring and the Fall to Ocean City.
The western theme was present throughout the park, the campsites were laid out well. The bathhouses were easily accessible and very large and clean.
Most of the special events take place during the weekend. There is plenty for families to do on site (arcade, mini golf, pool, high ropes adventure course) and several areas created for fun photo ops, including a movie prop from the 1975 version of Jaws.
The Western Theme park is open daily during the busier season and campers get a 20% discount off of admission.
The Western Theme Park wasn’t open during our visit, but I have no doubt that it would be additional hours of fun at the same level of excellence.
Swim at the Campground Waterpark
Campground guests have free access to the Water Park during peak season and free access to Mini-Golf during Spring & Fall.
There are several waterslides, a lazy river, and a gradual entry area perfect for younger kids.
Our campsite was at the end of this dock with views of Grays Bay. Campsite CE16 gave us fantastic views and access to the pool, playground, bathhouse, and dock within a very short walk.
I honestly can’t say enough great things about our stay at Frontier Town. It seriously exceeded my expectations!

Just love the ocean resort towns of the Eastern Seaboard … Ocean City is no exception!
We have been going to OC for over 25 years. Frontier town is like our second home in the summer. If you go back again try assateague crabhouse on 611. Best crabs in Ocean city and great homemade soups and crabcakes.
Glad you got to see the ponies on Assateague Island. We saw them last year. Do you now know why we love to go camping??
